The fourth of seven letters that Jesus commissioned John to write on the Island of Patmos was to the Church in Thyatira. This church was in a town of great prosperity known for its trade guilds. This is the longest letter written to the smallest church which says this problem was serious. And the problem was toleration. The people in these churches tolerated false teaching inside the church – the leaders saying – go ahead – join the unions, go to the religious ceremonies to other gods if that helps you keep your job. Eat, drink and do immoral deeds – that’s fine – God will understand. And Jesus comes to John and says – write this church a very serious letter – tolerating sin is unacceptable.
